Q: I've heard that it's better to have my tires filled with Nitrogen rather than
regular air, is that true?
A: Nitrogen inflation is a new product that some tire retailers have begun to
market in recent years. Nitrogen molecules are larger than air, so in theory,
tires will maintain pressure longer when filled with Nitrogen. Additionally,
Nitrogen does not expand and contract as much under varying temperature
conditions. The catch here, though, is the fact that to gain any real benefit
from the use of Nitrogen, you would need to have a higher concentration of
Nitrogen than is typically achievable by simply adding Nitrogen to a tire as
most tire retailers do. What really is most important is to be aware of
maintaining proper tire inflation. Whether you use Nitrogen or air, tire
pressure should be checked at least once a month.
